Energiefonds Overijssel funds energy storage system that reduces CO2 emissions by over 2 million kilograms a year

To address fluctuations and congestion on the electricity grid in Overijssel, an innovative energy storage system is being built at the floating solar farm on Bomhofsplas in Zwolle. By integrating with the solar farm, solar power will be stored locally for use at a later date, contributing to a more stable and sustainable energy system. Energiefonds Overijssel, one of the funds managed by StartGreen Capital, (co-)finances this system. All contracts were signed in October 2024 and construction has now started.

Storage capacity that makes a difference

Opened in 2020, the floating solar park generates 5.06 TJ of green electricity annually. This project, a battery energy storage system (EOS) with a capacity of 11 MW of power and 22 MWh of storage, marks an important next step. The system not only improves the balance on the Overijssel power grid, but also ensures more efficient use of green power. With the storage technology, solar energy can be stored at times of surplus and utilised during peaks in demand. This strengthens the electricity grid and enables further sustainability.

Parties involved

The EOS Bomhofsplas battery project is an initiative of Green Energy Storage (GES) and is made possible by energy supplier Greenchoice and financier Energiefonds Overijssel. The system will be installed and connected to the solar park by Privatis. Bomhofsplas is a sand extraction site owned by the landowner, Dekker Groep, which is supporting the project. Local energy cooperative Blauwvinger Energie will have the opportunity to become a co-owner in the future.
